Mark Bailey loved music and woodwork a school, but was unable to build a guitar - it was thought too difficult. Luckily at the age of 17 (with persistence) he got a job at the Patrick Eggle Guitar factory in his home city of Coventry, and learnt his skills hands-on working alongside some of the best guitar makers on the planet, including Patrick Eggle, Gary Levinson and Rob Williams, and Trevor Wilkinson of ‘Fret-King’ In 1998 Mark started Bailey Guitars with partner Carol Davies, eventually setting up his own guitar making workshop producing a range of his own designs and has become a well respected custom guitar builder of all kinds -but specializing in acoustics and jazz archtops.
Now based in South Ayrshire Scotland, they work from converted barn and are the only completely solar and wind powered guitar builders in the UK if not Europe, and use as much native, reclaimed and FSC woods as possible - this was one factor in being chosen by acoustic composer & innovator Preston Reed to build his personally designed signature Baritone acoustic and jumbo models. These beautiful sounding instruments are featured in the much read Bailey Blog - along with detailed build information and updates about production models, custom work and the internationally renowned Build Your Own courses.
Last year saw the celebration of 15 years of Bailey Guitars, and with the usual “ nothing but the best attitude” the years highlight was the giving away of a top of the range £5k Kithara to a lucky Bailey customer - this years first milestone is the creation of the first fairly traded acoustic guitar using wood from a community in Tanzania via the Sound & Fair trading organisation. However the high spot for Mark is launch of the first online Bailey course of its kind - “How to design your own guitar” which is the precursor to the fully instructional “Build you own Guitar” which will be launched this Autumn on Udemy, after many years of writing, planning and filming!
With an increasing base of excellent players who have turned away from mass produced factory instruments, Bailey Guitars’ reputation for high quality, well made, playable guitars continues to grow - “Quality with a Conscience” for sure, but the bottom line with all Baileys is that they are “Made to be Played”
